Making Lunch Fun

I’ve been posting pictures of the fun lunches I’ve been sending with Hannah to Pre-K.  Through trial and error as well as great websites like this one, I’ve learned a few tricks for how to create fun lunches and keep them together until lunchtime:

  • Use a shallow container for your creation
  • Put other lunch items beneath whatever your main piece is (character, face, animals, etc) to keep it from shifting or falling apart by lunchtime.
  • Some items I’ve used to get the main piece high enough are a ziplock baggie filled with goldfish and craisins or raw veggies, pieces of ham or turkey and cheese rolled up together or a slice of bread.
  • There are a few common kitchen tools that are helpful in making creative lunches: an x-acto knife, various cookie cutter shapes, and an apple corer (the round end is great for making perfect circles  out of foods like cheese slices)
  • I have found that there are some foods that are common in most of the lunches I have made so these are good to have on hand: cheese sticks & raisins (great for eyes), Nori (roasted, salted seaweed–good for anything that is black/dark like eyelashes), bread, American Cheese, turkey, ham, goldfish, gummies/fruit snacks & craisins.
  • You might think Nori is an odd product but the roasted and slated variety tastes similar to a chip and my 4 year old loves it.  It also sticks very well to cheese, especially if you put a little drop of water on it before you stick it to the cheese.
